A little something different this week. Less of the the rappity-rap, and more of the R and the B.
Ciara – “Body Party Remix” (Feat. Future and B.o.B)
Producer Mike Will Made It speeds up the original Ghost Town DJs sample and adds some struggle bars from Future and B.o.B.
The Weeknd – “Kiss Land”
The first single from the upcoming album, also titled Kiss Land. This is the dark, slightly trippy, acid-R&B you’d expect from The Weekend, but it sounds a bit more polished than earlier efforts, like House of Balloons. Halfway through, the track blends into the more subtle “John Carpenter.”
Kelly Rowland – “Dirty Laundry”
Probably the most buzzed-about song of the week. This one has Kelly baring her soul about living in Beyonce’s shadow while dealing with physical abuse from an ex.

Without much fanfare, RZA’s Soul Temple Records released this song today on it’s bandcamp page(available for purchase). Not much is known about it, except that is “previously unreleased,” which suggests it is an older track(maybe). So it may not appear on the upcoming Wu album in July. Regardless of where it ends up, Deck, Raekwon, RZA, and U-God all hold it down. Wu-banga.

The lovely folks at billboard.com have put up the full album stream for Kweli’s Prisoner of Conscious, in stores May 7. The album features guest appearances from Curren$y, Kendrick Lamar, Busta Rhymes, Nelly, and Melanie Fiona.

Okay, I know I say this every week, but it WAS a very interesting week. We had the loss of a notable member of the ’90s hip-hop era. We had another major artist lose another major corporate sponsorship. We also had a handful of solid mixtapes, including Chance The Rapper and J.Cole. And Kanye tweeted you guys! In between all of that, some pretty major singles dropped:
Rick Ross – “Box Chevy”
Despite an eventful recent history that included health issues, an assassination attempt, and controversy over lyrical content, Rawse keeps chugging along without changing anything. “Box Chevy” sonically follows the formula of “911″, “B.M.F”, and well, most of Rich Forever, but it still holds its own. For his upcoming Mastermind album, Ross drops a very high quality (think cinema quality) 9-minute short film for the single. Courtesy of your mom’s favorite website, WorldstarHipHop.
Talib Kweli – “Rocket Ships” (feat. Busta Rhymes)
With RZA on the track, it’s exactly what you’d expect. Bong. Prisoner of Conscious coming on Tuesday!
Jay-Z – “100$ Bill”
While on a non-stop quest to have his hand in everything hip and cool, Jay-Z also took a moment to executive-produce the “Great Gatsby” soundtrack. It contains many modern favorites like Andre 3000, The xx, Lana Del Rey, Gotye, and Jay-Z’s favorite artist Jay-Z.

Chicago emcee, Chance The Rapper dropped his aptly-named second mixtape earlier this week. I’m new to Chance, but I’m digging it so far. This tape includes features from new-school favorites Ab-Soul, Childish Gambino, and Action Bronson, among others. Check out “Everybody’s Something”, with uses a slowed interpolation of Slum Village’s “Fall In Love.” So, it literally sounds like Dilla on acid. And I like it. The sound, not acid…
While you’re here, also check out the new video for “Smoke Again” with Ab-Soul. I like how they’re stunting in the parking lot in a 2007 Toyota Camry. I can totally relate.

Fresh from the internets, J. Cole delivers another collection of songs to hold us over until Born Sinner on June 25th.
Enjoy.

Here are the tracks that were popping over the past week, in our humble opinion.
Hustle Gang – “Memories Back Then” (feat. T.I., B.o.B, Kendrick Lamar, & Kris Stephens)
The lone flame in a pretty lackluster week in hip-hop music. All three emcees really spit on this one, even B.o.B, who usually is hit-or-miss with me. Mostly miss. This is from the upcoming Grand Hustle/Hustle Gang compilation.
Ab-Soul “The End Is Near” (feat. Mac Miller)
2013 XXL Freshman and Black Hippy Ab-Soul kicks some pretty sick bars with Mac Miller over a simple beat by Larry Fisherman, who is also Mac Miller.
Chinx Drugz – “I’m A Cokeboy” (feat. French Montana, Rick Ross, Diddy)
Well, definitely not a new song, but a new video. And I’m sucker for this beat and the sample. Rick Ross’ moobs make a cameo, so there’s that to look forward to.

More new music from the past week, not by Drake.
Daft Punk – “Get Lucky” (feat. Pharrell and Nile Rodgers)
JAM OF THE WEEK!! French EDM/House duo Daft Punk gets some help from Pharrell to take us to their space disco.
Statik Selektah – “Birds Eye View” (feat. Raekwon, Joey Bada$$, and Black Thought)
JAM OF THE WEEK!! Okay, it’s a tie. C’mon, Rae, Joey Bada$$, AND Black Thought on one track? It’s not even fair.
Slaughterhouse – “House Gang”
Slaughterhouse is perennial favorite around the MusicandModeling offices, so it’s always great wto hear new material. This one is off the new Funkmaster Flex mixtape, Who You Mad At? Me or Yourself?(Whaa? Whatever.) Everyone enjoy their day…
Childish Gambino – “Think of Me”
Another one from the Funkmaster Flex’s new mixtape.

Nearly a quarter century after their debut, 3 Feet High and Rising, and a decade from their last album, De La Soul still sounds fresher than most of emcees of this era. De La samples the Disc 2 “Intro” from Wu-Tang Forever (the track right before “Triumph”, hence the ‘Spirit of the Wu’ credit). “Get Away” speaks on the current state of hip-hop, much like RZA did back in ’97. This dopeness will be on thier forthcoming album, You’re Welcome, coming later this year.
