Jay-Z shoots us all right in the heart with this one.
A little less than two days after the internets went internuts over the arrival of Jesus Blue Ivy, Father Hov unexpectedly drops this sweet, heartfelt loose track to honor this proud moment. In its three-and-a-half minutes, “Glory” captures:
Blue’s conception:
You don’t yet know what swag is
But you was made in Paris
And mama woke up the next day and
Shot her album package
His happiness and pride:
A younger, smarter faster me
So a pinch of Hov, a whole glass of B
And gave us a rare look into some private pain:
False alarms and false starts
All made better by the sound of your heart
All the pain of the last time
I prayed so hard it was the last time
And,
Last time the miscarriage was so tragic
We was afraid you disappeared
But nah, baby, you magic
But the real emo-punch, that will make thugs cry, is a guest appearance from Blue herself. Her first cries after taking her first breath are heard at the end of the song. Knowing that fact make the moment far more surreal. And if you are lucky enough to be a parent, it may transport you back to hospital for your own “Glory” moment (like it did for me).
Some of Jay-Z’s best moments were songs where he’s more emotional or introspective, and this is no exceptions. Lay it on top of a soulful Neptunes beat, “that’s a hell of a recipe”. Glory.
